Chehel Sotoun (Persian: چهل ستون\u200e, literally: “Forty Columns”) is a Persian pavilion in the middle of a park at the far end of a long pool, in Isfahan, Iran, built by Shah Abbas II to be used for his entertainment and receptions. In this palace, Shah Abbas II and his successors would receive dignitaries and ambassadors, either on the terrace or in one of the stately reception halls.

Chehel Sotoun (The Palace of forty columns). It is called Palace of forty columns, as there are many columns, and in Iranian, 40 means many. Incidentally, there are twenty columns, and these are reflected in the pool in front, which might also account for its name. The function of this palace was for holding religious-national ceremonies and royal festivals and for receiving royal ambassadors and guests. Must visit while in Isfahan.

There are repair works in the complex. Nevertheless the garden is very beautiful. It is worth paying a short visit. Recently emerged (not completely, though) from a long restoration process, the 40-columns-palace is located in a beautiful Persian garden, and hosts huge mural paintings, with historical meaning - in the inner side, and an impressive mirror arcade - in the outer side... Do not count twice, the pavilion has only 20 columns ;-) should visit very beautiful arts
