The Islamic Republic of Iran Medical Council is a Non Governmental Organization(NGO) which is responsible for licensing, authorization, and registration of the all health care professionals (except nurses who are registered by Iran Nursing Organization.) to practice in Iran. IRIMC strives to achieve the following goals: 1) Continued improvement of the quality of health care 2) Improvement of the medical practice as well as medical education to a more excellent level. 3) Promoting as well as maintaining the quality of health care practice 4) Definition, protection and supporting patients' rights 5) Protection of the professional rights of the health care professionals 6) regulating bi or multilateral collaborations between health care professionals and other associations & organizations. All Iranian health care professionals are registered and licensed by IRIMC. IRIMC represents 254,311 members (which 700 of them are international health care workers) including 92071 general practitioners, 43550 specialist and sub-specialists in medicine, 29,527 general dentists, 3,307 specialists in dentistry, 22,770 pharmacists, 1,325 clinical laboratory doctors, 41,907 midwives, and 19,854 other licensed health care workers (such as physical therapists, optometrists,) 196 regional branches have been established nationwide through independent and simultaneous election procedure. Each regional branch consists of a board of directors with regional president, vice president, treasurer and secretary whom operate under the supervision of IRIMC president and the supreme council. 2860 health care professionals serve as the boards of directors of all IRIMC regional offices in Iran.
